Located in AinBal El Shouf, Mount Lebanon, Lebanon, Identity Villa is a testament to the beauty of blending old and new. The original building, constructed in 1852, had undergone two previous extensions in 1943 and 1980, each with its own distinct style and materials. When Tarek Ibrahim was tasked with proposing a new extension for the house, he recognized the importance of preserving the existing structure while creating a seamless transition between the old and the new.
What sets Identity Villa apart is its ability to speak the language of the old house while incorporating modern materials and techniques. The cantilevered stairs, connecting the ground floor to the first floor, pay homage to the circulation pattern of the original house, but are constructed using steel and wood, adding a contemporary touch. The entrance is highlighted through a void space, creating a sense of hierarchy and directing attention to the main entrance.
The use of natural stone with rough cut in the extension echoes the imperfections found in the craftsmanship of the old house, creating a harmonious connection between the two. The stone is treated as a single block, with no visible joints, giving the impression of a massive rock contrasting the rough and jointed stone of the original structure.
Identity Villa also takes into consideration the importance of circulation in old village houses. The circulation areas are clad in wood, distinguishing them from the rest of the functions and emphasizing their significance. This design choice not only adds a visual element of interest but also pays homage to the traditional village houses where circulation played a crucial role.
With a plot size of 474 sqm, the old building occupying 95 sqm, and the new extension covering a total of 140 sqm (52 sqm on the ground floor and 88 sqm on the first floor), Identity Villa seamlessly blends the old and the new, creating a space that tells a story while meeting the needs of modern living.
The design process for Identity Villa was not without its challenges. The small plot size, municipal regulations, and the owner's requirements all posed difficulties in creating a design that fulfilled the program's objectives. However, through careful planning and a bold vision, Tarek Ibrahim and his team were able to overcome these challenges and create a design that respects the history and character of the old house while introducing a fresh and contemporary aesthetic.
Identity Villa is not just a beautiful architectural creation; it is a testament to the power of design to bridge the gap between the past and the future. By preserving the identity and spirit of the old house while incorporating modern elements, Tarek Ibrahim has created a space that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. This project has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 for Architecture, Building, and Structure Design.
Identity Villa is a true masterpiece, showcasing the possibilities of modern extensions and offering a new perspective on blending old and new. It stands as a reminder that great design can transcend time and create spaces that are both functional and emotionally resonant.
